New Program! April 2015 Block Lottery

At our March 2015 meeting we introduced a new voluntary program for CLMQG members - a block lottery! Our first lottery will occur at the April 2015 meeting, so if you'd like to participate please read the rules below and get busy sewing!

Our block lottery works like this:
  • Members make one or more quilt blocks according to the rules given for each lottery.
  • Each block brought to the lottery must be the correct size stated in the rules to be included.
  • Each block you bring to the lottery earns you once chance to win the drawing.
  • Blocks MUST be made of quilt shop quality fabrics - use fabrics that you love because chances are good that others will love them too :)
  • If there are more than 24 blocks contributed to the lottery, we will split the pile in half and draw two winners.
  • Your block(s) must be labeled with your name (you can use an address label stuck to the back) so that the winner knows who made each block.
  • If you win the lottery you must bring a finished project made with your winning blocks before you can be eligible to win future lotteries, though you may continue to contribute blocks to all lotteries.

The rules for the April 2015 block lottery:
  • Block size: 12.5" unfinished
  • Pattern:  Star - any star block you like - friendship stars, Ohio Stars, lone stars, feathered stars, wonky stars.  The possibilities are practically endless!
  • Background fabrics must be low-volume (light colored)
  • Star fabrics must contain dots.
  • Have fun!!

Each of the board members made some star blocks to show as examples at the March meeting.  All these blocks will be included in the lottery.  Here are the photos...

You can use multiple low volume fabrics in the background.

Or a single fabric in the background.

You can even put multiple star blocks within your 12.5" unfinished block!

Why not try out a new star block pattern that you haven't made before?  Or if you have a particular favorite make a couple of those?  You can find lots of ideas for different blocks by googling "star block quilt patterns", and there are tons of free patterns and tutorials out there.  If you need some guidance on what makes a fabric "low-volume" read this post or look to this Pinterest board for help.

The most important rule is to HAVE FUN! We are hoping to make these block lotteries a recurring program. If the April lottery has good participation we have lots of ideas just waiting in the wings for new lotteries in the June/July and September/October 2015 months :)

Happy Sewing!
