Block of the Month #8

Block of the Month #8
Woven Chevron Block Tutorial
Inspiration for this block came from this tutorial by Elven Garden Quilts
Presented by Sharon T.

12.5" unfinished block
1/4" seam allowance

Step 1

Cut from background fabric (White)
(4) 3 1/2” Squares
(4) 4” Squares
(2) 4 1/2” Squares

Cut from Color 1 (Navy)
(4) 4” Squares
(1) 4 1/2” Square

Cut from Color 2 (Green)
(4) 4” Squares
(1) 4 1/2” Square

Step 2

Cross-Over Squares

1. Take a 4 1/2” squares (two background and one of each color). Pair each colored square with a background square, and draw a diagonal line from one corner to the opposite corner on both background squares.

2. Sew along both sides of the drawn line 1/4” away from the line.

3. Cut along the drawn line, creating two half-square triangles from each of your pairs. (total of four HSTs)

4. Press seams

5. Trim your HSTs to 4” square. You will now have four HST squares - two navy/white and two green/white.

6. Pair each navy/white square with a green 4” square, and pair each green/white square with a 4” navy square.

7. Draw a line diagonally through each solid 4” squares (two green and two navy). When you pair these with its’ HST partner, make sure the drawn line runs PERPENDICULAR to the HST line.

8. Again, sew either side of the line, 1/4” away (as per #2) and cut along the drawn line.

9. Press seams. You’ll have a total of eight squares (two pairs of each of those below). You will only need to use the two like that at the top left, and the bottom right.

10. Trim these to 3 1/2” squares. First line up the 45 degree line on your ruler with the long diagonal seam on your block, and trim the side.

Turn your block 90 degrees to the right, and line up the 45 degree with the short diagonal seam, and the 3 1/2” line along the bottom of the square. Trim this side.

Continue turning your block and trimming until you have a 3 ½” crossover square.

Repeat for the remaining three crossover squares.

11. Pair the remaining 4” squares. Follow steps 1-4 and make a total of eight HSTs.

12. Trim them to 3 1/2”.

13. Lay out your HSTs, background 3 1/2 squares and crossovers as shown.

14. Sew squares together to make one 12 1/2” unfinished block.
