April 14, 2014 Meeting Minutes

1.  We had 29 people in attendance at our meeting on Sunday, April 14, 2014, including 4 guests. No new members joined, so our total membership remains at 60.

2.  Treasurer’s Report: Last month we had no financial activity.

3.  Upcoming Meetings:

  • May 4, 2014: 11am - 4pm, 2014 Membership fees are due; Board member elections; BOM sew-in; SewMod will be vending 
  • June 8, 2014: Leslie Gebbie will be teaching a workshop on machine wool applique. She will have a kit of fabrics for this “modern and simple” applique. The kit will cost approximately $8.00. Check our guild’s page on the MQG website for signups. will be vending. The owner, Donna, will bring a truck full of goodies and park in the parking lot for us to go out and shop.
  • July meeting is tentatively set for July 13, 2014. We are considering having a few members do “trunk shows” to show their evolution as quilters. Please email us if you are interested in speaking at this meeting: crystallakemqg (at) gmail (dot) com
4.  Committee Update: 

  • Laura Watts, Charity Chief, announced that 23 quilts were donated for Project Night Night last month! Quilts should be 40X50 or 50X60. If you are working on a quilt for this charity, please email Laura to let her know ljbenz2003 (at) yahoo (dot) com.
  • Debby Greening, Swap Swami, announced our next swap: a 5x5-inch charm square swap. The fabric theme is bright & modern! Cut 56, 5-inch squares from one yard of quilt shop quality fabric (no Jo-Ann's, Hobby Lobby, etc.) and bring them to the May meeting. Debby will redistribute the new charm packs (should be about 2 of each fabric) at the June meeting. Oh, Fransson! has a great tutorial for cutting 56, 5-inch charm squares from 1 yard of fabric here. If you signed up at the April meeting, she already has your info. Anyone else who would like to join in, please e-mail her at deb (at) greening1 (dot) com. If you are unable to make it to the May meeting, please contact her to make other arrangements to drop off your fabric. 
  • Anuschka Matthews, our Bee Keeper, announced that there are three bees: one meets in Lake Zurich the first Tuesday of each month at 7:00 pm; a second meets in Crystal Lake on Monday afternoons; the third bee meets in Cary on Wednesday evenings. Email her if you are interested in joining one of the bees: anuschkamatthews (at) hotmail (dot) com. This is a great way to promote modern quilting with others.
  • Ann and Bobbie, our Workshop Wranglers, have started planning our future workshops. They are looking into a possible art quilt workshop.
  • We are looking for someone to help with documenting our Show and Tell pictures. Please email us if you are interested in helping in this way: crystallakemqg (at) gmail (dot) com

  • International Quilt Festival Chicago in Rosemont, June 19 – 21, 2014
  • “Threads from Past to Present” in Batavia, July 18 – 20
  • Upper Midwest Machine Quilt Show in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin, August 7 - 9
  • AQS in Grand Rapids, MI, August 20-23
  • QuiltCon 2015 in Austin, TX, February 19 – 22, 2015. Check soon for submission details if you would like to enter a quilt in this show.
6.  New Business:

  • Michael Miller Challenge Rules: Any solid or Michael Miller printed fabric can be added to the fabrics that were given out. The deadline has been extended to July 25th. To enter, upload a photo of your project (anything quilted) to the fabric challenge forum on the MQG website. Three winners will be chosen; each will receive a year’s worth of free fabric. If you signed up and do not use your fabric, please return it to the guild so it can be used for our charity.
  • Sale Table will be occurring at our July and October meetings. Members can donate magazines, books, patterns, notions, and quilting knick knacks. There will be a set price list. Other members can purchase items with cash only. Whatever is left will be donated to one of three local charity/thrift shops. The proceeds from the Sale Table will go to the guild to help pay for our holiday party and other fun things.
  • Board Nominations: So far, the four current board members are the only people who have been nominated for the next year’s positions.

7. Reminders:
  • Modern Quilt Guild Affiliation: 20 of our members have successfully subscribed to the MQG website.
  • We are still looking for volunteers for member profiles on our blog and for the July trunk show. If you are interested in either of these opportunities, please email us at: crystallakemqg (at) gmail (dot) com
  • If you have a blog, please add the CLMQG and MQG logos and links to your blog.

8. 2014 Block of the Month (BOM): Paige and Ann presented the two April blocks. Directions and photographs have been posted on our blog; click the “BOM” label at the top of the blog to be taken to the page. All members are encouraged to play along with the BOM program.

9. Show and Tell: Several members brought lovely quilts to share.

10. The meeting portion ended, and we had a brief social time and sew-in set-up.

11. During the sew-in, members worked on various projects.
