2014 Block of the Month

We are excited to introduce CLMQG's 2014 Block of the Month program!

Beginning in January and continuing through August 2014, each month one or two of our guild members will present a modern block at our monthly meeting. The instructions for these blocks will be posted here on our blog for the use of members, guests, or any other modern quilters out there who wish to join us!

This BOM program is designed for quilters of all experience levels:

  • beginners will learn basic piecing techniques and increase their knowledge base with the skill-building progression of blocks
  • intermediate level quilters will enjoy the variety of newly designed and modernized traditional blocks
  • experienced quilters will be challenged to think outside of the box to make each block their own

For our sample and instruction blocks we will be using the following Robert Kaufman Kona Cotton solid colors to match our CLMQG logo:
  • Navy 1243
  • Orange 1265
  • Candy Blue 1060
  • Tarragon (green) 316
  • White 1387
Feel free to use the same colors or find a focus fabric or color scheme you love and dive into your stash - these blocks would make a great scrappy quilt!

A supply list complete with suggested yardage amounts will be discussed and provided at our meeting on Sunday January 12, and later posted here for future reference.

Due to the high cost of printer ink and paper, we cannot provide printed copies of each month's block directions at our meetings.  Please print the directions from your home computer if you'd like to have them handy at our meetings.  Thank you for your understanding :)

Each of our 12 blocks will finish at 12" square (so 12.5" as sewn individually), and some months we will present more than one block. As the months go by and new blocks are introduced, we will progressively fill in a 3 x 4 stylized grid of what the final quilt will look like.  When the last blocks are revealed in August, the layout will be complete.

As a guild, we have made a goal to use all the sample instruction blocks to create a finished quilt to be displayed and raffled at the October 2014 Countryside Quilt Show in Crystal Lake.
