Block of the Month 2014 Designers Wanted!

We are looking for some more volunteers to design blocks for our 2014 Block of the Month Series.

Beginning in January, each month a member will sew and present a quick demo on how to construct that month's 12" finished block. Photos of the construction steps and brief written instructions will also be provided by the member and posted each month here on the website approximately one week prior to the meeting.

You may choose to design a new block, or you can choose a design that you have seen online or in a magazine or book (just be sure to give proper credit to the original designer!). Please keep in mind that we are a Modern Quilt Guild, so the block designs should reflect that. Don't be scared - it will be great fun! You can do it, and we can help you!

If your block design(s) is chosen, you will be provided with fabric to make your sample block that will eventually be part of a guild quilt that will be either raffled or donated at the end of the year.

For more information about this program and to volunteer to design a block, please email us at crystallakemqg (at) gmail (dot) com.

Please volunteer by December 1 so that we can begin scheduling blocks for each month.

Here are links to two US Modern Quilt Guilds that offered BOM programs to their members in 2013. Check them out to get some block ideas or just to see what other guilds are up to:

Thanks everyone, and have a safe and happy Thanksgiving holiday!!

Member requests help for Washington, IL

One of our members, Darlene M, has a grandson that lives in Washington, IL. Nolan's home was one of only six in his neighborhood that was not destroyed by the tornado that hit the area last Sunday. He was visiting Darlene when this terrible event occurred, and the rest of his family was away in Naperville, so none of them were harmed - thank goodness! But his mother, a school teacher, reports that over 100 families in the school where she teaches lost their homes. Many of Nolan's friends and classmates have lost everything.

Darlene is asking for help from her friends.

She is collecting new children's quilts (approximately 40" x 60"), new books, and new stuffed animals to distribute to the young children of Washington who have lost their homes and all their belongings. Her daughter-in-law will make sure that the donated items are given to the right families.

Can you help the families of this Illinois town? Maybe you've got an already pieced quilt top that you could quickly finish and donate? Or maybe while you are out shopping you could pick up a new book or stuffed animal to give? Your donations can be dropped off at Material Girl in Crystal Lake by December 19th.

Thank you so much for anything you can do to help these families in their time of great need! And please keep the people of Washington in your thoughts and prayers.

2.  Sew Mod vended before, during, and after the meeting.

3.  Treasurer’s Report: We have $1460 in our guild checking account.

4.  Upcoming Meetings:
  • Holiday party: December 8th from Noon-4:00pm in our regular meeting space.  See the Committee Update below for more information.
  • We will have an open sew-in after our meeting on January 12, 2014. Bring whatever project you would like to work on.  Meeting time is 11:00am-4:00pm.  Registration instructions will be posted on the website approximately 7-10 days prior to the meeting date.
  • We are in the planning stages for our 2014 meetings. Some workshop ideas that are being considered (per the 2013 survey results) include paper piecing, applique, a portable pressing table, and a Christmas gift workshop.
  • We are also planning on having one sew-in during 2014 dedicated to Project Night Night, our guild’s selected charity for this 2013-14 membership year.
  • If you have any other workshop/meeting ideas or suggestions, please email them to crystallakemqg (at) gmail (dot) com.

5.  Committee Update:
  • Laura Watts, Charity Chief, has delivered a total of 29 bags to Project Night Night. Laura has a need for more boy or gender neutral quilts. Quilts should be a minimum of 40 X 50 inches and both the batting and fabric used should be 100% cotton. Please email Laura if you are working on a quilt for this charity ljbenz2003 (at) yahoo (dot) com.
  • Swaps: There will be a handmade ornament swap at our December meeting/Holiday Party. You do not need to sign up. If you want to participate, bring a handmade, wrapped ornament. There will be a mug rug swap in January; sign ups for that will be at the December meeting.
  • Holiday Party: Cathy Roberts gave an update of her committee’s plans for the December holiday party:
  1. Thank you to everyone who donated red and green fat quarters at today’s meeting. These fat quarters will be used for prizes at the party.
  2. You must RSVP for the party by December 1 by emailing trishaswank (at) gmail (dot) com
  3. A sign-up sheet was passed around for people to sign up to bring appetizers, desserts, or beverages (non-alcoholic, per the bank’s rules). If you are bringing a food that needs to stay hot (i.e. in a crockpot), please bring an extension cord.
  4. We will be playing a fabric Bingo game, so you'll need to make your own Bingo card and bring it with you. Also bring buttons or other markers. If you didn’t get directions for the Bingo card, you can download them at http://www.fonsandporter.com/content_downloads/QGBingo.pdf
  5. There will be a white elephant UFO exchange. Bring any UFO (UnFinished Object) from table runner to bed-sized quilt in a paper bag and bring home someone else’s UFO. Instructions for the UFO are not necessary, but they would be helpful if you have them.
  6. For Show and Tell in December, bring your favorite holiday quilt.
  • We have a new volunteer! Anuschka Matthews is going to be our Bee Keeper.
  • We are still in need of a committee chair for our workshop committee. Please email us at crystallakemqg (at) gmail (dot) com if you are interested in helping with this.

6.  Upcoming Quilt Shows:

7.  New Business:
  • We will be starting a Block of the Month (BOM) program in January.
  • There will be 12 different 12" finished blocks.
  • Early in the year, blocks will be beginner level and throughout the year, we'll aim to build skills by adding new techniques.
  • Each participant can use the fabrics/color scheme of their choice.
  • Different members will be designing 12” finished blocks using modern designs. The responsibilities for designing a block include bringing a demonstration block to a meeting, and writing basic instructions and taking pictures of the block construction steps for the website.
  • If you design a block, the guild will provide fabrics for your demonstration block, so that at the end of the year, the blocks will all be put together into a quilt that we can raffle off.
  • So far we have four members who have volunteered to design blocks: Karen L, Mary B, Darlene M, Diane H.
  • If you are interested in designing a block please let us know - we'd love to have many of our members involved! To volunteer a design or ask questions about this program, please email us at crystallakemqg (at) gmail (dot) com.

8.  Reminder: Please make and wear your nametag to each meeting.

9.  Show and Tell: Thirteen members brought projects for the Schoolhouse Workshop Challenge. Members voted for the top three quilts from the challenge. Photos have been posted to our Facebook page. Remember, you do not need to have a Facebook account to view our page.

10/11.  Jacquie Gering of Tallgrass Prairie Studio presented a wonderful lecture and trunk show. She showed many of her beautiful quilts during her entertaining talk. She also answered questions during her lecture. See our Facebook page for photos from her trunk show.

Red and Green - Will you help?

The Holiday Party Committee has been busy planning a fabulous get-together for us, and they need your help. But don't worry - it's an easy way to help!

If you are planning to attend the Holiday Party on December 8, please bring a red or green quilt-shop-quality fat quarter to our November 10 meeting as a donation. The fat quarters will be bundled as prize giveaways for some of the party activities. If you'd like to donate more than one, please do! As a member there is no cost to attend our party, but we think it would be fun to offer some prizes.

So will you help us?

Please bring your fat quarter(s) to the meeting on November 10 at 1:00pm. If you'd like to make a donation but can't come to the November 10 meeting, please email us at crystallakemqg (at) gmail (dot) com, and we'll arrange a way to get your donation to the Holiday Party Committee.

Thanks for all you do to make our guild fun and welcoming!!

See you November 10!
